Misión 19 on Feb 14th.

* * English translation at the end * *

And indeed it was a mission with this restaurant..
5 weeks ago since its grand opening I made the promise to visit as soon as posible the new restaurant of the baja chef, Javier Plascencia. The first time I tasted his exquisite experiments in the restaurant Erizo, a fan of flavors and undiscovered combinations in the creativity of this spectacular chef and the wonders offered by local producers of cheese, wine and vegetables was opened for me.

Misión 19 is located in the second floor of the building VIA Corporativo in Tijuana, Baja California. It is the first eco construction built in the baja region and it's designed to give an efficient use in resources, energy and materials of construction. Reason enough to visit this beautiful building made of glass and concrete and its restaurants and exhibitions.

And Zee Party got started...
With a super tasty, cutie, little burger made with tiny shredded meat and 2 dressings of cheese and avocado. This mini burger has the perfect size of a munch while you wait for the main courses, though I would've eaten all of those adorable burgers if possible.
I followed the waiter's recommendation on the salad, I had a Golden Beet Salad. I must confess that at the very beginning I was expecting the regular radioactive magenta beets fried or grilled, but no, it was actually a natural golden color in the vegetable. It pretty much has the same flavor, but if you toss some rucola, "beluga" lentils, aged cheese, mushrooms, croutons and radioactive magenta beet puree it turns into a flavorful salad of fantastic combinations.
I tried also a "Baby Chicken" in a rosemary and black truffle sauce served with potato wedges and carrot strips. I couldn't resist the temptation of eating for the first time a black truffle and discover the mystery of these gifts from nature, despite the waiter strongly recommended any of the steaks cooked to perfection in a special oven that keeps the meat moist and juicy.
I had a glass of wine of the region and also tried the bakery of the house, which is also a remarkable thing of this restaurant.
There are like 6 or 7 different types of buns made with seeds and spices. I had a hard time choosing a different one to taste and I definitely had to repeat the seed bun.
I finished this wonderful meal tasting 4 handcrafted cheeses with 3 fabulous homemade marmalades of Guava, Agave Honey and Hibiscus flowers.

On Feb 14th, or 15th or March 29th or any other day with or without a celebration will be the perfect occasion to know some of the wonders created by this chef.

Recycled Beer Carton Wallets

And these are my latest creation.

These wallets are made with recycled beer cartons and white cardboard. Handy, lightweight and spacey enough to keep in place your bills, coins, ids, tickets, coupons and whatever it fits!

Each wallet is a one-of-a-kind item, you can choose your favourite beer carton or I can choose a special one for you. I already have some made with cartons of Guinness, Coors Light, Birra Moretti, Victoria, Cucapá, Spaten and much more.

Time goes by so slowly...

Yeah, this is one of those moments when I'm anxiously and desperately waiting for my biggest (and wettest) dream ever to come true: To win the World Nomads Photography for Bhutan. Winners will be announced on November 1st 2010 on World Nomads.com. It's unbelievable the way I've been so immersed in this contest that time seems to go by so slowly. And while time is "going by", it turns out that my EnviroArt project with Bombyx Eco Boutique won the first place at the Tijuana Joven 2010 contest, which was organized by the Municipality's Institute for the Youth or IMJUV (Instituto Municipal para la Juventud) in Tijuana, B.C. on October 28 2010.

Happy Halloween to y'all!

A Tribute

Hi there!
It's been a long while I haven't been here. The good news are that I do have lots of things to write about me and Bombyx. Great new experiences and new designs happened while I was gone. Also, many great opportunities and new challenges are always emerging from the internet, like this Scholarship to Bhutan. I never (wet) dreamed about a photography scholarship in my teen years, or my early twenties.

So I took this chance and submitted my application for the World Nomads Travel Photography Scholarship. When I was working on this journal, I thought I would have a great deal with the pictures since I only had a few to show, but the true challenge came with the story.

Well, this is the article I wrote for World Nomads Travel Photography Scholarship.

A Tribute

I’m thankful and extremely proud I inherited three of my father's greatest passions in life: Food, Traveling and Photography.

Photography has been an elemental part in my life since I was a kid. I constructed my most cherished dream by looking at my parents’ pictures of their trips, listening to their amazing anecdotes and dreamed that one day I would be the one telling my adventures and showing the pictures of my trips around the world.

This scholarship is a one-time opportunity in my life to travel to a country with an immensely rich culture and a stunning natural scenery, that I probably would never have the chance to visit like Bhutan and being mentored by the outstanding world-class photographer Jason Edwards makes it the greatest learning and traveling experience that any avid amateur photographer, traveler or writer (like me, the three of them) could ever wish for.

Please keep reading my journal on World Nomads: http://journals.worldnomads.com/floresx/

Thank YOU! :)

WRITE THE FUTURE

It's the new Nike ad directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the guy from 21 grams, Babel and of course, Love's a Bitch, remember him? Well, this guy made this fabulous football ad that truly worths a couple of awards or something. Excellent appearance of Wayne Rooney, my favourite in this ad!
Here it is :)

Bombyx Now Available at Nakú Store

Jewelry and Card Holders available at Nakú Store!

I'm so glad my products are finally selling here! This is a really cool store, with lots and lots of colourful items and even small cute toys and plushes. Nakú Store offers a wide collection of jewelry, bags, and apparel beautifully handcrafted by mexican artisans, local and abroad. Here you'll find the perfect gift for friends and family, and of course, for you. You'll probably exit the store with at least 3 items. Prices are as friendly as the staff at the store :)

Nakú Store is part of the famous restaurant El Yogurt Place in Playas de Tijuana, which I also entirely recommend. Fabulous fresh organic food for vegan and unvegan in a cozy, friendly restaurant. Breakfasts are beyond tasty, colourful and healthy. Yeah, all of them in the same dish.

Both are located at Cantera St. #360, next to the bullring Plaza Monumental Tijuana.

MacGyver's Kitchen Wednesdays Presents: Egg in the hole.

It is also known by a large number of alternative names, examples being Rocky Mountain toast, egg-in-a-basket, moon egg, egg-in-the-hole, one-eyed Jack, bird's nest, gas house eggs, the Elephant Egg Bagel, frog in a hole, camp eggs or camper's eggs, bull's eye, egg in bed, eggy-in-a-bready, moon toast, Moon over Miami (WTF??), Popeye, and Cowboy Eggs.

This is my favourite recipe of eggs. It's not only because of its absolutely delicious taste and texture, or because it's probably the easiest way to fry eggiwegs, it's because is one of my most cherished memories of my childhood, this is the first recipe I ever cooked... Successfully. Well, here it is:
Egg in a hole

Ingredients:
1 egg, 1 slice of bread, butter, salt and pepper to taste.

Procedure:
- Cut a medium circular hole in the center of the piece of bread with a cookie cutter or upside down glass.
- Fry bread (slice and removed "hole") with butter until crisp.
- Put more butter in the center of the hole and crack the egg into hole. Fry for a couple of minutes.
- Put some more butter, flip the bread/egg on top of it and fry for 1-2 minutes.
- Serve the egg, add sal and pepper to taste et voilá! Your egg is done! Serve with ham, bacon, hashbrowns, cheese or whatever you like. I recommend to toss some dill on top of the egg for a delicate fresh flavour or even better if you toss some Kräuterlinge (mixture of herbs and spices by Knorr, I don't know the name of it in english).

- Munch, munch aaaand munch.

Sh*t-Loads of Energy!!

UK Prepares to Use Human Poop to Power Homes.

I have to admit that when I first read this headline it sounded to me like some Southpark joke, but no! Finally the Water World kind of future is getting close.
Sewage had been used as fuel by the Chinese to generate power and bath water was said to be heated with biogas in Assyria in the 10th century BC. This time poop is being used to obtain completely renewable electricity — as long as we keep eating — I wonder if it works best with vegan poop or regular. Well, at least scientists are not considering how to get water from our own poops... Yet.

Hello Everybody!

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Martha Flores and I am the artist behind Bombyx Eco Boutique. I love to create all kinds of artcrafts like jewelry, accessories, apparel, knitting wear and even home decor and furniture! I primarily work with recyclable/reusable/repurposed materials such as leather, aluminium, cardboard and many more. I re-stitch, upcycle and re-fashion these materials to turn them into gorgeous portable art. I especially enjoy working on projects that represent a true challenge to me.

Bombyx Eco Boutique is now based in Tijuana, Baja California, MEX., but first had its roots in Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua, MEX. I've been designing and making my pieces myself since 2004. Since then I've been working to bring an innovative and environmentally sound approach to fashion design, creating products that are practical, sophisticated, and, above all, distinctive.

Bombyx, pronounced "bomb-eex" got it's name inspired by the caterpillar of the domesticated silkmoth, Bombyx mori. There's nothing special with the name, I just like how it sounds :)

At the moment I'm really enthusiastic working in new ideas, materials and updates! I'm just about to finish some new pieces. For now I will show you some of my previous work.

I hope you like them as much as I enjoy making them.

Best,

Tita

ESP:
¡Bienvenidos a mi blog!

Tita
